General information about the SCAPIS study
The aim of the Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study (SCAPIS) is to predict and prevent cardiovascular disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
SCAPIS provides a nationwide, open-access, population-based cohort for the study of cardiovascular disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. SCAPIS has recruited 30,154 men and women aged 50 to 64 years and examined them to get detailed imaging and functional analyses of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems.
The data were collected at six university hospitals in Sweden (Gothenburg, Linköping, Malmö/Lund, Stockholm, Uppsala and Umeå).
The SCAPIS recruitment phase started in 2013 and was completed in the end of 2018.
A re-examination of half the cohort from the baseline examination is being conducted from 2024 to 2026 using virtually the same protocol as the baseline examination.
In 2012 a Pilot examination (n=1,111) was performed in Gothenburg in order to examine and evaluate the practical and economical aspects, as well as the scientific value of a larger nationwide study.
The novelty and significant contribution of SCAPIS is that it combines size with extensive phenotyping. The goal is to further develop individualized treatment and improve health care by building this research resource.
